Niigata Nippo Features Our Research on Baseball Plate Discipline Using VR

On July 8, 2026, Niigata Nippo published a feature on our research into baseball plate discipline using virtual reality (VR).

Can VR Improve Plate Discipline? The Future of Science-Based Training

The article introduced findings from a research group led by Lecturer Genta Ochi and Associate Professor Morishita of the Department of Health and Sports, showing that batters’ plate discipline is strongly associated with their batting performance.

Research Aim

Judging whether a pitch is a strike has often been treated as an imprecise skill assessed through players’ and coaches’ intuition. We are investigating whether training this ability can improve batting performance.
This collaborative study combines VR technology with practical baseball expertise. By quantitatively assessing plate discipline in realistic VR environments, we aim to make this previously difficult-to-observe ability measurable and develop science-based training methods.
